Largest Earthquake Drill

Californians participated today in the largest earthquake drill in history. Named the "ShakeOut Drill", the coordination is part of a larger campaign for earthquake preparedness. Millions of people dropped, covered and held on (see image). The campaign offers a plan in the event of devastating earthquake. Because of its underlying geology, scientists have long thought a powerful earthquake in California probable. There is no way of accurately predicting when such an event might occur.

Here is more on earthquake risk in California and on plate tectonics.
