Anniversary: Book Banning

On this day in 1960, Penguin Books was found not guilty of obscenity in Britain's Lady Chatterley's Lover trial. D.H. Lawrence's 1928 novel was not printed in the UK until 1960 because of its provocative sexual content and 4-letter profanities. The book has been banned at different times around the world including in the United States. A New York law banning the movie version was found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

Nothing like this could ever happen today.
