Look, Listen (a Sunday rant)

I don't know when it happened, but the self-indulgent preambles "Look" and "Listen" are ubiquitous. It's not enough that you like to hear yourself talk, you have introduce the importance of your words with "Look" or "Listen"? It's like advertising in your conversation. You might as well point to your mouth instead.

Look, I'm trying to help you. Listen, if you use these preambles you sound like a self-indulgent buffoon. If you'll just watch the Sunday politics show, you'll see what I mean. "Look" and "Listen" serve no purpose but to announce self-importance. So please stop it. If you're going to announce your self-regard, you might as well start a blog. (back)
