Chicago to Tokyo in 72 Minutes

Preston Carter, an Engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has conceptualized a "hypersonic" aircraft that would run on hydrogen at the border of the earth's upper atmosphere and outer space, "skipping" across the sky.

In principle, it could be used to launch satellites for a fraction of what it now costs to launch rockets.

Going from Chicago to Tokyo would take 72 minutes.

Going from New York to Los Angeles would take 35 minutes.

(thank you Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for the artist's rendering)
