The Art of Politics

David Brooks, whom, I must admit, I admire even when I disagree with, wrote of Sarah Palin's colloquialisms: "Somewhere in heaven Norman Rockwell is smiling." But I think back to a different kind of Kitsch: a Reagan-eighties hyper-realism best described by J. Hoberman in his brilliant essay on Americanarama. I've been watching a lot of Twin Peaks recently and frankly, Sarah Palin has a lot more Lynch than Rockwell in her oratory. I'm not sure who Joe Sixpack is, but my guess is he drinks more Pabst Blue Ribbon than Heineken.
