Extra Dimensions, String Theory and the LHC

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in addition to giving this blog its name, may prove the existence of extra dimensions. That is, dimensions beyond the 4 commonly experienced - 3 in space (north/south, east/west, up/down), 1 in time - and hidden from human perception. Confirmation of extra dimensions would be exceedingly cool and would also help evaluate some big picture physics theories and mathematical predictions. Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe remains my favorite lay physics book. Here he is giving a TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talk in 2005. He talks about CERN and the LHC at the end.
